Observation Narrative
Plot location: Slope along Holiday Creek ca. 0.2 km NW of Rt. 614 bridge.
This site is a sheltered, NE-facing lower slope bordering Holiday Creek. Relatively high Ph, Ca, and Mg levels in soil samples collected here indicate soils derived from mafic bedrock. Vegetation is a lush, medium-aged post-logging forest dominated by very tall Liriodendron tulipifera up to 75 cm DBH. Understory and herb layers are luxuriant and dominated by Lindera benzoin and Cimicifuga racemosa, respectively. This vegetation grades rapidly just upslope to much drier and apparently less fertile mixed oak forest.
